Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon MotoGP Crash Amid Title Battle
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin’s chances in the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend due to his ongoing remarkable performance, especially as Francesco Bagnaia experienced a crash.
Martin came to Aragon just five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
Despite a disappointing weekend for Bagnaia in terms of points, Martin experienced a similarly consistent weekend, securing second place in both of his races. Martin has now finished in second place in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia’s weekend culminated in a late-race confrontation with Alex Marquez. Despite a poor start, Bagnaia was making his way through the pack and caught up to Marquez’s back tire with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez went off the racing line at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and both crashed in turn 13.
During the press conference that followed the race, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though it was evident he was hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You ought to direct your questions to Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Undoubtedly, it was hard to see since there was a significant amount of dust in that area. I believe this prevented Alex from leaning further, similar to the incident with Joe Roberts in Moto2, where he crashed during the final lap while contending with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, this resulted in a collision."
"I really hope they're all right because after the accident, they appeared to be near the motorcycles. I wish them well for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical facility where scans revealed no fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing discomfort in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming San Marino Grand Prix, part of the MotoGP World Championship, is scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year, he will have just one week to recover from the Aragon race in preparation for Misano.
Though Bagnaia has secured victory twice in the MotoGP category at Misano, it was Martin who triumphed in both 2023 races. This year, the Spanish rider leads the championship by 23 points as he heads into his competitor's home event.
