Jorge Martin Weighs in on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon Crash: Implications for MotoGP Championship
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin’s hopes for the championship received a significant lift at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, whereas Francesco Bagnaia suffered a setback after crashing.
Martin reached Aragon trailing Bagnaia by five points in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
Despite Bagnaia's disappointing weekend in terms of points, Martin's performance mirrored his pattern with two more second-place finishes, making it six consecutive races where he has secured the runner-up position since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. After struggling at the beginning, Bagnaia was making his way up the ranks and reached Marquez's rear wheel with just seven laps remaining.
On the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. When Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to express a strong opinion either way.
"It's challenging," Martin stated. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
“Undoubtedly, visibility was poor due to the significant amount of dust in that area. I believe this prevented Alex from leaning further, similar to Joe Roberts' incident in Moto2, where Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez, resulting in a collision.
"I hope they're alright since it looked like they were near the bikes after the crash. I wish them well for the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed that no bones were fractured. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he will again have just one week to recover after the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who triumphed in both races in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider leads the championship by 23 points as he heads into his competitor's home round.
