Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon Crash as Championship Lead Extends Ahead of Misano
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin's chances for the championship improved significantly at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his ongoing streak of consistent performances, while Francesco Bagnaia experienced a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin continued his streak of finishing second, securing the runner-up spot in both races this weekend, making it six consecutive second-place finishes since the summer break.
Bagnaia experienced a dramatic end to his weekend due to a late-race collision involving Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish start, Bagnaia managed to work his way up through the pack and found himself right behind Marquez with only seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, the two collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident but was noticeably hesitant to strongly side with any particular viewpoint.
"It's tough," Martin stated. "You ought to inquire with Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez."
"Certainly, it was hard to see clearly because there was a lot of dust in that area. I believe that Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2 when Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing against his American Racing teammate, Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was a collision."
"I hope they're alright since it looked like they were near the bikes after the crash. I wish them well for the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed that no bones were fractured. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend, the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will host the next round of the MotoGP World Championship, the San Marino Grand Prix. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury following a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year, he will have just one week to recover after the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who clinched both wins in 2023. This year, the Spanish racer arrives at his competitor’s home event with a 23-point advantage in the championship standings.
