Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon Crash as Championship Battle Intensifies
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident that occurred between his championship competitor, Pecco Bagnaia, and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin’s chances of winning the championship improved at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following Bagnaia's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
Despite a disappointing weekend for Bagnaia in terms of points, Martin also experienced a similar outcome, securing second place in both races, continuing his streak of finishing second in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish start, Bagnaia made his way through the pack and caught up to Marquez's rear tire with seven laps remaining.
On the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at the 12th turn. When Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this mistake, the two collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin mentioned. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it was hard to see due to the significant amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what happened with Joe Roberts in Moto2 when he crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Eventually, there was contact."
“I hope they’re alright since it looked like they were near the bikes after the crash. I wish them well for the next race.”
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is taking place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Last year, Bagnaia competed with a leg injury sustained from a crash in the Catalan Grand Prix, and similarly, this year he will have just one week to recover from Aragon before racing at Misano.
While Bagnaia has secured two victories in Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who clinched both wins in 2023. This year, the Spanish racer heads into his opponent's home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
