Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon Crash as Championship Battle Intensifies
Jorge Martin shares his thoughts on the Aragon MotoGP collision between Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez
Jorge Martin has expressed his views regarding the incident between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez at the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances in the championship improved significantly during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, especially as Francesco Bagnaia failed to finish after a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings. This gap followed Bagnaia's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
A challenging weekend points-wise for Bagnaia coincided with Martin securing another set of second-place finishes. This marks Martin's sixth consecutive second-place finish since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend ended with a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish start, Bagnaia was making his way up through the pack and reached Marquez's back tire with just seven laps remaining.
On the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. When Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and both went down at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was noticeably hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin commented. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Indeed, it’s challenging to see clearly as there was a significant amount of dust in that area. I believe this prevented Alex from leaning further, similar to Joe Roberts' situation in Moto2 when he crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate, Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, this led to a collision."
"I really hope they're alright. It looked like they were near the bikes after the accident, so I'm wishing they'll be fine for the upcoming race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he will again have just one week to recover following the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Even though Bagnaia has secured victory twice at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who clinched both wins in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider holds a 23-point lead in the championship as he heads into his competitor’s home race.
