Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon Crash as Championship Battle Intensifies
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia failed to finish due to a crash.
Martin entered Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings. This gap emerged after the Italian racer secured wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin continued his streak, securing second place in both races, making it six consecutive second-place finishes since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend ended with a late-race collision involving Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish beginning, Bagnaia was making his way through the pack and reached Marquez's back wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez went off the racing line at turn 12. Bagnaia seized the opportunity to overtake, but the two collided, causing them to crash at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was noticeably hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
Martin commented that it's challenging and suggested inquiring with Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez for more insight.
"Certainly, it's hard to see clearly since there was a significant amount of dust on that side. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2 (Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez), and eventually, they made contact."
"I hope they're alright since it looked like they were near the bikes after the crash. I really hope they'll be fine for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no bone fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is set to take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he will also have a one-week recovery period after the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Even though Bagnaia has secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who clinched both wins in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider heads into his competitor's home race with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
