Jorge Martin Weighs In on Aragon MotoGP Crash as Championship Battle with Bagnaia Heats Up
Jorge Martin shares his perspective on the collision between Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his ongoing remarkable performance, especially as Francesco Bagnaia faced a crash.
Martin entered Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin continued his streak of finishing in second place in both races, making it six consecutive second-place finishes since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend concluded with a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. Following a slow start, Bagnaia was making his way up the positions and found himself right behind Marquez with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, but the two collided, causing both to crash at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, but he was noticeably hesitant to take a strong stance either way.
"It's challenging," Martin commented. "You should inquire with Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez."
"Certainly, visibility was challenging due to the amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex was unable to lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2 when he crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, this led to a collision."
"I hope they are alright because it looked like they were near the bikes after the accident. I wish them well for the upcoming race."
Following the accident, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend, the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will host the next stage of the MotoGP World Championship, known as the San Marino Grand Prix. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race despite having a leg injury from a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year, he will have just one week to recover after the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia's two previous MotoGP victories at Misano, it was Martin who claimed victory in both 2023 races. This year, the Spaniard enters his rival's home event with a 23-point lead in the championship.
