Jorge Martin outperformed Marc Marquez in the initial practice session for the 2024 German MotoGP, which took place at a chilly yet dry Sachsenring.
Eleven-time Sachsenring victor Marquez heightened anticipation for his initial Ducati triumph by dominating the majority of the 45-minute session.
However, Jorge Martin, who won twice last year, also started off strong and eventually climbed to the top of the leaderboard.
Martin had to sit out the concluding moments of the event after his airbag went off while he was slowing down for Turn 12!
At the same time, Marquez had already returned to the pits after a crash at Turn 1, which prematurely concluded his session.
Maverick Vinales secured third place, while his teammate Miguel Oliveira on the RS-GP finished in fourth.
First-year racer Pedro Acosta, who has his last opportunity to surpass Marquez's record as the youngest MotoGP race winner this weekend, clocked the fifth-fastest time for Tech3 KTM despite a late crash at the final turn.
Augusto Fernandez, Enea Bastianini, and Alex Marquez rounded out the top eight positions.
Current world champion Francesco Bagnaia, who aims to continue his winning streak of five races, returned to his typical cautious beginning (following his lead in FP1 at Assen) by finishing in ninth place.
Aleix Espargaro, who pulled out of last Sunday's events in Assen due to a hand fracture sustained during the Sprint on Saturday, was cleared to race but decided to stop after only a few slow laps on his RS-GP. He will not be participating further this weekend.
Remy Gardner, a regular competitor in WorldSBK, stepped in for the injured Alex Rins at Monster Yamaha and participated in his first MotoGP track session since Valencia 2022. This session also marked his debut on the YZR-M1, where he finished in 22nd place.
Meteorologists predict a significant rise in temperatures on Saturday, accompanied by potential thunderstorms, followed by a decrease in temperatures on Sunday.
