Jorge Martin Reflects on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon Crash as Championship Battle Intensifies
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin’s chances of winning the championship improved at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency. Meanwhile, Francesco Bagnaia's hopes took a hit as he suffered a crash.
Martin entered Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin continued his streak of finishing in second place, achieving this in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend concluded with a late-race clash involving Alex Marquez. After not getting off to a good start, Bagnaia made his way through the pack and caught up to Marquez's back tire with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez drifted off the racing line at turn 12. Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this mistake, but the two riders collided and crashed at turn 13.
In the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was obviously hesitant to strongly favor one side or the other.
"It's hard," Martin commented. "You should talk to Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Absolutely, it’s hard to see clearly since there was a lot of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to Joe Roberts' situation in Moto2, where Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was a collision."
"I really hope they're alright because it looked like they were near the bikes after the crash, so I wish them well for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center where X-rays confirmed that he did not have any fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained during a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he will again have just one week to recover from the Aragon race before competing at Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who triumphed in both races in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider heads to his competitor's home circuit with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
