Jorge Martin Reflects on Aragon MotoGP Chaos: Bagnaia-Marquez Crash Shakes Up Championship Battle
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin’s chances of winning the championship improved at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit in the World Championship standings behind Bagnaia, who had clinched wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
However, Bagnaia had a challenging weekend in terms of points, while Martin secured two more second-place finishes, continuing his streak of coming in second in all six races since the summer break.
Pecco Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race collision with Alex Marquez. Despite starting poorly, Bagnaia made his way through the pack and reached Marquez’s back tire with only seven laps remaining.
On the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. Bagnaia saw an opportunity to capitalize, but as he did, the two collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the press conference following the race, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, but he was noticeably hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin mentioned. "You ought to inquire with Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez."
"Undoubtedly, it was hard to see clearly due to the dust in that area. I believe Alex wasn't able to lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2 when he crashed on the final lap while competing against his American Racing teammate, Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was contact."
"I hope they are alright. It looked like they were near the bikes after the crash, so I’m wishing they’re fit for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned that he was experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, will take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Bagnaia participated in the 2023 race with a leg injury sustained from a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix, and this year he will again have just one week to recover from the Aragon race before competing at Misano.
While Bagnaia has secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, Martin claimed victory in both races in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider enters his competitor's home event with a 23-point lead in the championship.
