Jorge Martin Reflects: Grid Penalty Didn’t Deter Bagnaia’s Dominance at Dutch MotoGP
Jorge Martin stated that he didn't believe he had the opportunity to defeat Francesco Bagnaia. Martin acknowledged that the three-place grid penalty was not a factor in his ability to compete with Bagnaia.
Similar to the sprint race on Saturday, Jorge Martin was the sole competitor who could challenge Francesco Bagnaia during the Dutch MotoGP.
The Pramac Ducati racer, even after receiving a three-position grid penalty for riding slowly during qualifying, advanced from fifth to second place on the first lap.
Despite Martin's efforts, the damage had been done; Bagnaia had already established a lead of more than half a second by the time Martin overtook Maverick Vinales for second place.
Talking about his race, Martin mentioned: "The weekend was challenging, especially on Friday and Saturday morning to make improvements."
"The podium finish yesterday wasn't great for me, but I can't complain. Congrats to Pecco!"
"He was in a league of his own. I felt fantastic and thought I was performing excellently. When I checked the lap times, I was astonished at our speed."
Despite my efforts, he kept extending his lead by fractions of a second each lap. I'm pleased with my performance and believe that both my technique and my overall sense of the race have significantly improved over the weekend.
"Although it wasn't sufficient, I'm pleased to have reached the 50th podium of my career."
Martin received a three-position grid penalty for riding slowly during the qualifying session. However, the championship leader feels that Bagnaia would have been too strong an opponent even if Martin had started in the second or fifth position.
"I don't believe so. Throughout the weekend, I never had the opportunity to be in first place," stated Martin. "During qualifying, I was near the top and might have been able to make some improvements, but during the race, it was out of the question."
"Pecco was performing exceptionally. I might have attempted an overtake early on, but discussing it now is pointless."
