Joe Roberts’ MotoGP Dreams Unshaken Despite Broken Collarbone: Lunchtime Meeting at Assen Spurs Team Interest
Top U.S. Motorcycle Racer Suffers Collarbone Injury, Attracts MotoGP Team Interest
Midday Discussion in Assen May Determine Joe Roberts' Future in MotoGP
According to his manager, Joe Roberts' chances of securing a MotoGP spot for 2025 remain unaffected despite his collarbone injury.
On Friday, America's top prospect for a future MotoGP career experienced a significant highside crash at Assen.
Although Roberts showed up at the garage and forcefully tore down a 'get well soon' sign, regulations barred him from participating in the remainder of the round.
However, John Hopkins, his manager, has disclosed that negotiations for Roberts' signature are ongoing with two teams, which is one more team than initially thought.
Hopkins mentioned to TNT Sports that they are currently in discussions with several teams.
"A few teams have shown interest in Joe."
"One specific instance, during lunch on Friday, went exceptionally smoothly."
Both of those teams are unlikely to be deterred by his collarbone injury.
"An injury is an injury, and it's not something that can be technically attributed to a rider," Hopkins stated.
"I don't believe it will have a significant impact. We are still striving to secure the MotoGP opportunity."
"Above all, our main goal is for him to secure the championship victory."
“He’s concentrating on the here and now. I’m concentrating on what lies ahead for him. We’re putting in our best effort. I don’t have any complete updates to share at the moment. However, we’re diligently working on it…”
Trackhouse, a rebranded Aprilia satellite project now under US ownership, is the team most strongly associated with Roberts.
Trackhouse has not announced any drivers for the 2025 season yet.
The first thing he said was, 'I'm going to race no matter what.'
Hopkins described Roberts’ operation: “I stayed with Joe throughout the night and into Saturday morning. Surgeons inserted a plate and screws into his right collarbone.”
"It's really unfortunate; he was performing exceptionally well. He had only completed two laps on soft tires before that happened."
"It was only a minor slip, something he had experienced previously. However, this time it got slightly out of control, and with the added effect of the wind, the impact was severe, causing him to land awkwardly. That's the nature of racing."
Roberts was optimistic about competing again within 48 hours, but regulations did not allow it.
"To be frank, Joe is a racer," stated Hopkins.
"The very first thing he said was 'I'm definitely going to race tomorrow.'"
"Clearly, there's a mandatory 48-hour waiting period after undergoing general anesthesia before you can compete, which is beneficial."
"But right away, I said, 'let's focus on Sachsenring.' He is fully committed to returning at Sachsenring and performing at his best."
The injured Roberts is likely to make a comeback during the round in Germany next week.
"I believe he has a chance to score some points," Hopkins remarked.
“He needs to rest and undergo physiotherapy this week to regain as much strength as possible.”
"Fortunately, the break wasn't severe. The bone wasn't severed or entirely out of place. It was significantly fractured but not completely misaligned."
After the race in Assen, Roberts ranks third in the Moto2 championship standings, trailing the leader, Sergio Garcia, by 23 points
