Jenson Button Warns Lando Norris: Don’t Let Emotions Show Weakness to F1 Rivals
Jenson Button gives Lando Norris tips on avoiding 'weakness'
2009 F1 champion Jenson Button advises Lando Norris to hide any 'weakness' from his competitors.
Jenson Button has advised Lando Norris to "exercise some caution with his emotions" following his close call in securing another Formula 1 win at the British Grand Prix.
Norris advanced from fourth place to take the lead at Silverstone, but a mistake on his part and a questionable strategy decision by McLaren caused the British driver to lose his chance at a highly anticipated home victory.
Just one week earlier, Norris's hopes for a win were dashed when he collided with Max Verstappen in the final moments of the Austrian Grand Prix.
Norris secured a third-place finish and later expressed his frustration, stating that McLaren has missed out on opportunities that rightfully belonged to them multiple times this season.
He expressed regret, saying, "I hold myself accountable today for not making some of the correct choices. It's frustrating. I despise ending up in this situation and having reasons for not performing adequately."
However, 2009 F1 world champion Button thinks Norris is being overly critical of himself and might inadvertently show “vulnerability” to his competitors.
"Lando should exercise more control over his emotions," Button commented on Sky Sports F1.
"He is heavily criticizing himself, and recent races have shown that this can quickly escalate."
"It's crucial to maintain a positive mindset. He's incredibly gifted, and I don't want him to be too hard on himself, which might prevent him from performing well at the next competition."
"You also want to avoid revealing to your competitors that you're struggling. Exposing such a vulnerability is something you'd prefer to keep hidden."
"It's wonderful that he expresses his emotions freely, which is fantastic for the audience, but from a competitive standpoint, he shouldn't be so hard on himself."
Norris secured his first-ever grand prix win in Miami and currently holds second place in the championship standings, trailing Verstappen by 84 points. Verstappen moved past Norris for second place with just four laps remaining at Silverstone.
