**Liam Lawson’s Red Bull Test Fuels Speculation Over Sergio Perez’s Future**
Speculation has arisen about Liam Lawson potentially taking Sergio Perez's spot after reports surfaced of a Red Bull F1 car test in 2024.
Speculation about Sergio Perez's future has arisen following news of Liam Lawson reportedly testing Red Bull's current F1 car, according to Lewis Larkam's report from Silverstone.
According to Motorsport.com, Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson, who debuted in Formula 1 last year as a replacement for the injured Daniel Ricciardo, is set to drive the 2024 Red Bull car, the RB20, during a filming day at Silverstone on Thursday.
Even though Red Bull offered Perez a new contract for two more years in June, he has been facing growing pressure due to his ongoing lackluster performance.
Max Verstappen has secured victory in seven out of the 11 races held this year, whereas Perez has not yet won a race and hasn't finished on the podium since the Chinese Grand Prix in April.
Perez hasn't managed to place above seventh in his last five races and has experienced a series of lackluster qualifying rounds. His most recent disappointing performance occurred at Silverstone on Saturday, where he exited in Q1, placing 19th after his Red Bull got stuck in the gravel early in the session.
Perez's impressive streak has positioned him in fifth place in the championship standings with 118 points, while Verstappen leads with 237 points. Red Bull is currently leading the constructors' championship, enjoying a 64-point advantage over Ferrari, who are in second place.
Christian Horner, the head of the Red Bull team, acknowledged that Perez's recent streak of subpar performance is evident and cannot be concealed.
"There's no way to avoid the spotlight in this sport, especially when Max Verstappen is your teammate," Horner remarked to Sky Sports F1 during the British Grand Prix.
"He is aware that he is being compared to the top competitors, and we require his support for Max since there are now two McLarens, two Ferraris, and two Mercedes. We urgently need to have two Red Bulls in contention."
Perez's performance has sparked rumors that Ricciardo might step in to take his place either this season or the next. However, Motorsport reports that this is far from accurate, as the Australian driver has not impressed since his full-time return to the F1 lineup.
Lawson's upcoming filming session has ignited new speculation that the New Zealander might be in the running to join Verstappen as his next teammate.
One year ago, Ricciardo impressed during a Pirelli tire test at Silverstone, leading Red Bull to decide to substitute Nyck de Vries with him at their affiliate team after just 10 races.
