Jenson Button Advises Lando Norris Against Showing ‘Weakness’ Amidst F1 Struggles
Jenson Button provides guidance to Lando Norris on avoiding displaying vulnerabilities
The 2009 Formula 1 champion, Jenson Button, cautions Lando Norris against revealing any vulnerabilities to his competitors in F1.
Jenson Button has advised Lando Norris to exercise caution with his emotional responses following a close loss at the British Grand Prix, where he was on the brink of securing another Formula 1 win.
Norris surged ahead from fourth position to take the lead at Silverstone, however, a mistake on his part, coupled with a misguided strategic decision by McLaren, led to the British driver missing out on a much-anticipated victory at home.
Merely a week following the incident where Norris's hopes for a win were dashed due to a crash with Max Verstappen towards the end of the Austrian Grand Prix, this event occurred.
Norris secured a third-place finish and later expressed his frustration that McLaren had missed out on opportunities that were within their grasp "on several occasions this season."
He expressed regret, stating, "I hold myself accountable for not choosing the correct actions. It's something I despise. I'm disappointed to be in this situation, offering justifications for failing to perform adequately."
2009 Formula One world champion Jenson Button thinks Norris is overly critical of himself, potentially exposing a "vulnerability" to his competitors in doing so.
"Lando should tread cautiously with his emotions," Button remarked on Sky Sports F1.
"He's being extremely hard on himself, and with the recent race, it can quickly become a downward spiral."
It's crucial to maintain a positive mindset. His skill level is so high, and I hope he doesn't become overly critical of himself, preventing a strong comeback in the upcoming race.
Additionally, it's crucial not to reveal to your rivals just how much you're struggling. Exposing such vulnerability is something you should avoid.
"It's wonderful that he shares his feelings openly, and it really benefits us as an audience. However, from a competitive standpoint, I believe he should not be too hard on himself."
Norris achieved his first-ever win in a Grand Prix in Miami and is currently second in the championship standings, trailing Verstappen by 84 points, who passed him for the second spot just four laps before the finish line at Silverstone.
