Jenson Button Sounds the Alarm: Red Bull Urged to Reconsider Sergio Perez’s Future Amidst Continuing Struggles
Jenson Button cautions Red Bull regarding Sergio Perez: "This situation cannot continue indefinitely"
"If he fails to score points in the upcoming race as well?"
2009 Formula 1 champion Jenson Button is of the opinion that Red Bull will be compelled to find a replacement for Sergio Perez should his subpar performance persist.
In the past five races, Perez has only managed to earn points on two occasions, marking a stunning decline in performance.
The driver from Mexico faced another challenging day at Silverstone, being eliminated in the first qualifying round and ending the race far from the Top 10, having been overtaken twice during the event.
Perez's dip in performance puts Red Bull's lead in the constructors' championship on uncertain footing.
McLaren is becoming a consistent victor in races and has a pair of drivers who can secure significant points, posing a potential challenge to Red Bull's dominance as the year progresses.
During the British Grand Prix weekend, while appearing on Sky Sports' Formula 1 broadcast, Button characterized Perez's showings as a "significant problem".
"Huge. It's a huge problem," he stated. "This past weekend was dreadful. In certain aspects, it was unfortunate. This isn't something that will occur every weekend.
"McLaren scoring so many points? That's significant. Mercedes didn't have both cars cross the finish line, but had their reliability been up to mark, it would have significantly reduced Red Bull's lead."
"They're currently at a disadvantage, ranking as the team with the third-highest points total in the recent five or six competitions. It's crucial for him to earn some points, even if he doesn't end up right behind Max."
Button, who partnered with Perez at McLaren during the 2013 season, thinks that Red Bull might need to find a replacement for him if Perez's streak of not scoring persists, with two more races to go before the summer hiatus.
"He emphasized that the situation cannot continue indefinitely. Should he fail to earn points in the upcoming race as well? They will soon have to replace him with another driver," he further stated.
"It's challenging. I understand it's an unpleasant sensation for a driver, truly awful. However, for them, the constructors' championship holds significant importance."
Red Bull granted Perez a fresh contract for two more years before the Canadian Grand Prix, a decision that came as a shock considering his challenges in the last two races.
Nonetheless, it has been revealed through subsequent reports that Perez's contract includes several performance-related clauses, providing Red Bull with the option to make alterations if desired.
Ex-W Series racer Naomi Schiff is confused why Perez's recent contract extension, securing his place on the team until 2026, didn't seem to elevate his confidence.
"She elaborated that the intensity of the competition has increased, not just because of its inherent competitiveness, but also due to Red Bull's reduced dominance compared to previous seasons. This situation requires Max to perform beyond the car's capabilities, something Checo has struggled to replicate."
"Similar occurrences were noted the previous year. The puzzling aspect is the lack of increased assurance a contract renewal should typically bring. It appeared as though he was pushing himself too hard to demonstrate his worth last year. Currently, that seems unnecessary."
"Undoubtedly, there will be conditions tied to performance. Their choice to retain him was meant to boost his confidence, not diminish it as it unfortunately did."
