JD.com Takes on Alibaba: Accelerates International Shipping to Engage Overseas Chinese Shoppers
JD.com tempts Chinese customers abroad with quicker delivery, competing with Alibaba
The online retail titan guarantees deliveries to customers in the US, Japan, and Singapore in potentially just five days.
JD.com is initiating a five-day international delivery service for consumers in the US, Japan, and Singapore, in its bid to compete against competitors such as Alibaba Group Holding, Shein, and Temu for a larger share in the global online shopping sector.
JD.com has announced that customers in certain countries who purchase items from brand stores operated directly by JD.com on its site, can now get their orders in a minimum of five days. Additionally, the company, located in Beijing, stated on Wednesday that the standard shipping costs in the US have been dramatically reduced by 50% to 58 yuan (equivalent to US$8.14).
The company JD.com has stated that their international shopping facilities primarily aim to serve Chinese customers residing overseas.
This action is taken at a time when the world's second biggest economy is dealing with declining consumer confidence. With local consumers tightening their belts, Chinese platforms – from PDD Holdings' discount shopping site Temu to Alibaba's international marketplace AliExpress – are now shifting their attention overseas, mirroring the strategy of the fast-fashion app Shein, which originated from China.
Alibaba is the proprietor of the South China Morning Post.
