Honda’s Struggles Force Johann Zarco to Reevaluate MotoGP Expectations for 2024
Johann Zarco believes that the outlook at Honda has shifted as a result of their disappointing performance. Zarco remarked, "When I agreed to join LCR, I anticipated that securing a top ten finish would be feasible, but I was mistaken."
Johann Zarco mentioned that Honda's poor performance has led them to reevaluate their objectives for the 2024 MotoGP season.
Throughout much of 2024, Zarco has been competing at the back of the pack alongside fellow Honda riders Joan Mir, Luca Marini, and Takaaki Nakagami.
In the grand prix at Assen, Zarco emerged as the highest-placed Honda rider, finishing in 13th position. Despite this, he was more than 42 seconds behind the race winner, Francesco Bagnaia.
In an interview with GPOne, Zarco admitted, "When I joined the LCR team, I believed I could secure a top ten finish, but I was mistaken."
"At the moment, our focus is solely on experimentation rather than specific objectives. It's possible that we may break into the top ten before the season concludes."
“The idea of reaching the podium seems far-fetched. It would be quite unexpected if we are competing for a win in 2025.”
As the season kicked off, Honda was at least competing with Yamaha. However, Yamaha has since made progress, leaving Honda's riders often battling each other.
Zarco stated, "When we compare ourselves to Quartararo, we see that we're still significantly trailing his performance, and he's performing at the same level as the other frontrunners."
"We're competing on multiple fronts. Observing Pecco gives us a clearer picture of what's coming next."
"As both a brand and as riders, we find this situation unacceptable, so we need to continue our efforts."
