Honda Revamps MotoGP Strategy with Romano Albesiano’s Appointment: Aleix Espargaro and Industry Voices Applaud Bold Move
Aleix Espargaro praises Honda's new technology chief for the "significant" progress made with Aprilia. In 2025, Espargaro will team up with Romano Albesiano at Honda.
Honda's decision to appoint Romano Albesiano as the MotoGP technical director for the 2025 season has received commendation from its riders. Aleix Espargaro, who is set to join as a test rider, described the decision as “smart.”
During the Japanese Grand Prix on Friday, Honda made a surprising announcement that it had recruited Albesiano from Aprilia to lead the development efforts for the RC213V.
Albesiano's recruitment is regarded as one of the most important decisions Honda has made in recent years, as he managed to turn the Aprilia from the least competitive motorcycle on the track into a victorious machine. This transformation has also drawn a top rider, Jorge Martin, to join the team in 2025.
Since 2017, Espargaro has collaborated with Albesiano at Aprilia and is set to join him in Honda's test team in 2025. He was among the first to commend Honda's decision.
Espargaro commented on the decision to switch to Honda, describing it as a smart move, especially since Italian engineers and European manufacturers are making significant advancements.
"This is a significant benefit for Honda and the engineers from Japan."
"The innovations he's introduced with the RS-GP have been impressive. I'm also pleased for Romano."
Being appointed as the chief technical director at the largest factory, which boasts an impressive history in the championship, is a tremendous honor.
"I am filled with pride and eagerly anticipate embarking on this new adventure."
"I am aware of Romano's participation with Aprilia's test team, which makes me understand that my position will hold significance."
"It will be wonderful to have Romano in the garage, and collaborating with him will be excellent because I hold him in high regard and share a strong relationship with him."
Joan Mir, who rides for Factory Honda, agreed with Espargaro's views, pointing out that Aprilia has previously faced a similar predicament to what HRC is experiencing now.
According to the 2020 world champion, this decision is crucial. He emphasized the need for individuals like Romano to become part of the team, highlighting Romano's extensive experience with Aprilia. He noted that over the years, Aprilia faced challenges similar to those currently encountered by Honda.
He advanced with the project, resulting in the creation of a high-performance bicycle.
"He has some understanding of what actions are necessary."
"Having him in this role, along with the Japanese team, technicians, and engineers, is beneficial. They are highly skilled, but having a European presence to encourage quicker advancement could be essential."
According to LCR's Johann Zarco, Albesiano's contribution will enhance the "exceptional quality of work" that the Japanese engineers at Honda are known for.
"The Frenchman expressed that he continues to believe that the quality of work produced by the Japanese is truly remarkable."
"Occasionally, certain choices require extensive time to make, which leads to delays in our progress."
"Introducing new perspectives from a European individual can inspire the Japanese to pursue more significant transformations while leveraging their robust efforts."
