Honda Racing Corporation Signs Aleix Espargaro as MotoGP Test Rider for 2025 Season Amid Challenging Period
HRC has announced that Aleix Espargaro will join them as a test rider for MotoGP in 2025.
Honda has formally announced that Aleix Espargaro will be joining them as their MotoGP test rider for the 2025 season.
Before his home grand prix in Barcelona, Espargaro made the decision to retire from full-time racing, which sparked speculation that he might pursue a position as a test rider.
Honda moved quickly once it was evident that the two sides were nearing a deal.
The deal is now formalized, with Espargaro set to head Honda's testing efforts together with Stefan Bradl.
Honda is experiencing the most challenging phase in their MotoGP history, so bringing on a rider with Espargaro’s skill and expertise could be extremely beneficial.
Espargaro was absent from last weekend's Dutch MotoGP due to experiencing two significant crashes, with the second occurring on the last lap of the sprint race.
Spanish rider Espargaro broke the fifth metacarpal bone in his right hand in the crash, but he plans to undergo magnetotherapy to accelerate his healing and hopes to be ready for the German Grand Prix at Sachsenring this weekend.
Honda has announced that Aleix Espargaro will join their team as a test rider in 2025, working alongside Bradl rather than replacing him. The statement from Honda Racing Corporation emphasized that this addition is aimed at strengthening their testing program.
Having nearly 250 top-tier race starts under his belt, the 34-year-old racer comes with extensive experience in Grand Prix racing and boasts an impressive record of three wins and more than 1,300 MotoGP points.
"He will collaborate with Stefan Bradl, a long-standing member of HRC, to further advance the Honda RC213V's development."
The top finish for a Honda at Assen was 13th place, achieved by Johann Zarco, whereas Joan Mir experienced another race-ending crash. This underscores the critical need for a high-profile addition to their test team to advance the project.
