Highs and Lows: Vinales Battles Through Crash While Oliveira Shines for Aprilia at German MotoGP
Vinales: “I did my best to hang in there until the finish” | Aprilia: “At last, the real Miguel has emerged”
Maverick Vinales: 'I'm particularly disappointed because we had a fantastic chance to perform well today'
Maverick Vinales, who topped the timesheets on Friday, saw his chances of qualifying well for the German MotoGP dashed after a major highside crash at the extended Turn 10 left-hander.
The Aprilia factory rider fell hard onto his back and took a while to get up, eventually receiving assistance from the track marshals.
Later examinations at the Medical Centre thankfully showed that the 'blunt trauma' did not cause any broken bones or damage to the ligaments and joints.
However, despite being in pain, Vinales managed to secure the seventh spot on the Sprint grid. He momentarily climbed to fourth place but was eventually overtaken by Enea Bastianini, Franco Morbidelli, and, in the final corner, Marc Marquez.
Vinales explained that prior to his qualifying fall, he was testing the boundaries to prepare for the final time attack and admitted he did not anticipate a highside at that moment.
“I did my best to stay strong until the finish. It's really disappointing because we had a good chance to succeed today. However, we can still be competitive tomorrow as our race pace is solid. I'm hopeful that I'll be in better physical shape.”
Vinales is the sole factory Aprilia racer participating, as his teammate Aleix Espargaro is sidelined due to injuries sustained at Assen.
Nonetheless, an RS-GP motorcycle still made it to the Sprint podium as Trackhouse rider Miguel Oliveira secured his best result on an Aprilia, finishing just behind Jorge Martin in second place.
Technical director Romano Albesiano commented that Aprilia has shown significant competitiveness at the Sachsenring in recent days.
"We anticipated challenges transitioning from the very fast circuit at Assen to this one, but we are not experiencing any issues."
"Regrettably, Aleix is absent from the racecourse, and Maverick’s accident has undoubtedly influenced his grid placement."
"We're happy with how Team Trackhouse performed; we've finally witnessed the real Miguel. He definitely earned this, particularly following all the injuries he dealt with last year."
