Guided by Greatness: David Alonso’s Championship Pursuit Fueled by Marc Marquez’s Sage Advice

David Alonso reveals important discussion with Marc Marquez
David Alonso has shared important advice from MotoGP champion Marc Marquez as he prepares for his first opportunity to clinch the 2024 Moto3 championship.
An 18-year-old racer is set to have his initial opportunity to clinch the 2024 Moto3 World Championship title during this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix. He arrives at the Motegi circuit leading the standings by 97 points.
Alonso, who has previously won the Red Bull Rookies Cup and the European Talent Cup, aims to secure a 100-point lead at Motegi to clinch the Moto3 championship, marking a potential triumph in just his second year of grand prix racing.
If Alonso secures a victory in Japan, it would finalize his achievement and equal the number of wins Joan Mir achieved in 2017 when he clinched the Moto3 championship. Additionally, one more win would tie him with Valentino Rossi's record of 11 wins in a single season in the lightweight class.
This year, Alonso has been mentored by Marc Marquez, the eight-time world champion, who has been providing guidance to the young rider from Aspar.
When questioned about the victory milestones he's approaching this Thursday at Motegi, Alonso commented, "The figures are impressive, but I try not to focus on them too much while I'm riding."
"Please concentrate on my perspective, as this holds significant importance for me. To illustrate, ever since I was a child, I had a dream… there's a video where someone asks me, 'What is your dream?'"
Typically, people suggest moving to MotoGP. However, I insisted that my aspiration is to achieve victory in every category, rather than immediately transitioning to MotoGP. This is because, to me, it's crucial to complete each chapter and fully experience the challenge of competing for a world championship, regardless of the category.
"I believe it offers a wonderful experience and provides a wealth of learning opportunities in this context."
Marquez advised me that it's more important to secure a championship title than to participate in MotoGP for any reason.
This year, Alonso has been receiving guidance from several leading MotoGP racers. He mentioned that whenever he attends a race, he makes it a point to talk with them, acknowledging that they reached the top level of the sport "for a reason."
"It's beneficial for us to be gathered here. When I'm with these individuals, I make an effort to pay close attention and learn from them, given that they are part of MotoGP for a reason," he mentioned.
"I enjoy seeking guidance from those who have already accomplished what I'm currently working on, as it's beneficial to learn from their experiences."
As Alonso strives to secure the championship this weekend, he can rely on the valuable experience available within the Aspar organization.
Nico Terol, who is now the sporting director, clinched the 125cc world title in 2011 under the Aspar team. Meanwhile, Jorge Martinez, the team's owner, has secured numerous championships both as a racer and in his managerial role
"It's an unfamiliar scenario for me," he remarked regarding his championship match point.
"Therefore, let's make an effort to pay attention to everyone on my team."
"Nico, for instance, accomplished it back in 2011. Moreover, Jorge will also be joining us to show his support. They advised me to aim for a typical weekend."
