German MotoGP Drama: Three Riders Penalized for Tyre Pressure Violations, Luca Marini Secures First Honda Point
Luca Marini awarded Honda's first point following three penalties for insufficient tyre pressure
Three competitors did not meet the minimum front tyre pressure requirements at the German MotoGP.
Augusto Fernandez, Johann Zarco, and Stefan Bradl received 16-second penalties after the German MotoGP on Sunday for not maintaining the required tyre pressure. Fernandez finished 14th, Zarco was 17th, and Bradl came in 18th.
Considering their final standings, the main impact is that Fernandez's drop in position results in him forfeiting his two points.
In the meantime, Luca Marini has earned his first world championship point as a Repsol Honda rider by finishing in 15th place.
The Italian racer narrowly missed securing 15th position, losing by a mere 0.037 seconds to Takaaki Nakagami of LCR Honda at the finish line. As a result, Nakagami earns an additional point for finishing in 14th place.
New tire pressure regulations for 2024 require that riders maintain a front tire pressure above 1.8 bar (previously 1.88) for at least 60% of a Grand Prix race, compared to the previous 50%, or 30% during a Sprint race.
The consequence for not achieving this minimum in a Grand Prix is a post-race time penalty of 16 seconds, or an 8-second penalty for a Sprint or shorter race.
