George Russell Avoids F1 Grid Penalty for Yellow Flag Incident in Baku, Receives Reprimand Instead
George Russell was given a reprimand instead of a grid penalty for not reducing his speed under yellow flag conditions in Baku.
The FIA has officially stated that George Russell will be given just a reprimand following an investigation into accusations that he did not reduce his speed adequately when yellow flags were displayed.
Russell delivered a remarkable performance on Saturday, clinching the fourth spot on the grid for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The UK racer's most recent qualifying victory against Lewis Hamilton secures his lead in their direct confrontations for the season.
Russell's fourth-place finish became uncertain when the FIA declared they were investigating a possible violation related to yellow flag rules.
Typically, when yellow flags are displayed, drivers are expected to reduce their speed, and the majority comply by decelerating adequately.
Nonetheless, Russell has avoided a grid penalty, merely receiving a warning.
The officials concluded this because they believed there was no "practical possibility" for Russell to have noticed the yellow flag, given his position on the circuit, and that his actions were suitable under the circumstances.
The officials additionally cited a prior incident with Charles Leclerc during the third free practice session.
The FIA issued the following clarification: "This situation closely mirrors a previous ruling by this group of Stewards concerning Charles Leclerc, although there are some significant distinctions.
Sainz veered off the track at the second turn. Following closely behind, Russell was fully engaged in his braking maneuver and, in contrast to Leclerc, had already begun to navigate the turn when the yellow flag was displayed to the far right of the runoff area. The officials determined that it would have been unreasonable to expect Russell to notice the flag, and even if he had spotted it, altering his braking would not have been feasible.
As soon as Russell turned the corner, he picked up speed in a regular manner. Contrary to Leclerc's experience, the green light panel positioned between turns 2 and 3 was located much farther along the track and was more difficult to spot at the moment he began to accelerate. Despite this, Russell eventually did catch sight of the green light.
Russell was unable to take advantage of DRS in that area as it had been turned off automatically, affecting his lap time. The officials highlighted several mitigating circumstances in the decision regarding Leclerc. In Russell's situation, the officials noted additional factors for consideration.
"Nonetheless, for safety reasons, it's crucial for drivers to recognize that upon noticing a vehicle off the track, and a green light signals their presence in a yellow sector, they should respond by either slowing down or moderating their speed to acknowledge potential hazards that may arise in a yellow zone."
"Hence, under these specific conditions, especially since the yellow flag was not visible, the Officials have decided to issue a Driving Reprimand instead of imposing a harsher penalty."
