Franco Colapinto’s Dream Debut: From Parc Ferme with Hamilton to Points Finish in Baku
Franco Colapinto describes his meeting with Lewis Hamilton in the parc ferme at Baku as "a dream come true."
Franco Colapinto, the latest driver to score points in Formula 1, has described his interaction with Lewis Hamilton as "realizing a dream."
Colapinto made an impressive showing at this weekend's Azerbaijan Grand Prix, securing a spot in the top 10 during the qualifiers and ultimately achieving an 8th place finish in Baku.
Williams achieved their highest shared finish since the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix, securing 10 points as Alex Albon crossed the line in seventh place, just one spot higher.
Hamilton showed his admiration for Colapinto by welcoming the Argentine in the winners' circle.
The Williams team member shared a post on social media, including a photo with Hamilton, and wrote: “Highlight of my day. It's surreal and truly a dream realized to exchange handshakes with Lewis Hamilton following a race. Amazing.”
Colapinto had his first Formula 1 race during the previous Italian Grand Prix, following Williams' decision to replace Logan Sargeant.
Williams has filled its vacancy for the upcoming year, as Carlos Sainz is set to join from Ferrari in 2025.
Colapinto is optimistic that his tryout this year will demonstrate he has earned his place on the grid going forward.
"Colapinto expressed, “They demonstrated a great deal of faith and belief in assigning me this role. It was a challenging gamble, one that numerous individuals couldn't grasp.”
"I aspire to demonstrate my abilities and prove that I merit a position in Formula 1. The chance and support provided by James are aiding in showcasing this."
"I'm putting in a significant effort to accelerate my learning process. My experience in a Formula 1 car is quite limited, spanning just two races, a single Free Practice 1 session, and a handful of laps in Abu Dhabi the previous year."
"However, considering the limited experience I have, scoring points in just my second race is truly a positive outcome and quite commendable. Therefore, we must persist, but it's indeed a promising beginning."
Williams has advanced past Alpine to secure the eighth spot in the constructors' standings, with seven races left in the 2024 season.
