Francesco Bagnaia takes control of the 2024 Dutch MotoGP Sprint race under sunny skies and warm temperatures in Assen on Saturday afternoon.
Bagnaia, who secured pole position after dominating each session leading up to the race, managed to stay ahead of current championship leader Jorge Martin. Aprilia's Maverick Vinales rounded out the podium finishes.
Martin now heads into Sunday’s grand prix with a 15-point advantage.
Enea Bastianini, who rides for the factory Ducati team alongside Bagnaia, managed to work his way up through the pack to secure a fourth-place finish.
Alex Marquez was given a long lap penalty for exceeding track limits, a punishment that Raul Fernandez also faced, soon after Bastianini passed him.
Despite the circumstances, Alex was the sole Gresini rider to finish the race. Marc Marquez, who started seventh after a qualifying crash, moved up to fifth by the end of the first lap but then crashed out at the beginning of the second lap after hitting an inside kerb.
Aleix Espargaro, who was already in pain from a fall on Friday and nearly involved in Marc Marquez's mishap earlier in the day, endured a major crash from sixth position at the second-to-last corner of the final lap.
Lorenzo Savadori and Alex Rins both experienced crashes, with the Yamaha rider managing to get back on track. Meanwhile, Luca Marini's Repsol Honda appeared to have an engine failure, emitting smoke.
Due to the increased temperatures, all top ten riders chose a hard front tire and a soft rear tire.
New tyre pressure regulations for 2024 require that riders maintain a front tyre pressure above 1.8 bar (down from 1.88 bar) for at least 60% of a Grand Prix race distance, and for 30% of a Sprint race.
The consequence for not achieving this minimum in a Grand Prix will be a 16-second time penalty added after the race, or an 8-second penalty for a Sprint or short race.
