Francesco Bagnaia Dominates Dutch MotoGP FP1 Amidst Turbulent Session
Dutch MotoGP: Francesco Bagnaia Takes Lead in FP1, Surpassing Marc Marquez
Francesco Bagnaia secured the fastest time in the first practice session of the Dutch MotoGP after Fabio Di Giannantonio's top time was invalidated.
The first practice session of MotoGP at Assen began poorly for Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro. The winner of the Catalunya sprint had to leave the track shortly after leaving the pit lane.
Espargaro managed to find his way back to the pits with the assistance of trackside marshals.
Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez were trading the quickest laps at the head of the standings.
Bagnaia became the initial racer to clock a lap time under 1 minute and 33 seconds, establishing a two-tenths of a second lead over the eight-time world champion.
Nonetheless, Bagnaia's lap time was disqualified for going beyond the track boundaries, whereas Marquez just managed to break the 1 minute 33 seconds mark to claim the leading position.
Bagnaia’s lap time was removed, causing him to drop to seventh place. Shortly after, he was further demoted to ninth as Fabio Quartararo and Marco Bezzecchi moved ahead.
Bezzecchi nearly lost control of his GP23 Ducati when it experienced significant instability while entering turns 14 and 15.
Maintaining his impressive performance, Raul Fernandez surpassed Marquez by clocking a time of 1:32.962s.
However, as the track conditions improved, Alex Marquez managed to extend his lead over Fernandez by more than a tenth of a second.
Bagnaia reclaimed the leading position, distancing himself by almost two-tenths of a second from Alex Marquez.
Bagnaia then delivered another excellent lap, surpassing his previous best by more than two-tenths of a second.
Bagnaia appeared poised to better his lap time, but it was Raul Fernandez and Alex Marquez who made gains, securing the third and fifth positions respectively.
Marc Marquez, initially in second place, closed the gap to just a tenth of a second behind Bagnaia's time, but then Fabio Di Giannantonio posted the fastest overall time.
Di Giannantonio ultimately had his quickest lap time disqualified for going beyond the track boundaries, allowing Bagnaia to reclaim the leading position.
