Fernando Alonso Responds to Adrian Newey Rumors Amid Aston Martin Struggles: ‘I’m Not a Fan of Excuses
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation regarding an announcement involving Adrian Newey this week
Fernando Alonso dismisses excuses amidst Aston Martin's challenges
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, amidst ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix hinted that Aston Martin might reveal the hiring of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, who is currently the chief technology officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year. After his departure, he will be able to join and work with a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about him potentially joining Aston Martin has intensified lately, while rumors of a move to Ferrari have diminished.
“There are still just speculations, and I believe it’s not solely one person’s responsibility to resolve the issues,” stated Alonso at Monza.
"It's about focusing on our current situation and what we're creating. We need to identify what's progressing well and what's not, so we can better prepare for 2025."
Newey being available next year would enable him to manage the 2026 car for a different team, potentially providing them a significant edge when the new engine regulations come into effect.
Aston Martin has poured significant funds into a new site at Silverstone and secured a contract with Alonso through 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of growth before Aston Martin launches a full-scale effort in 2026
"There’s nothing we can do about it," Alonso responded. "We’re dependent on our team, and I believe that both Lance and I are giving our best effort every weekend."
"During a weekend like this, full of inspiration, I understand it will remain entirely anonymous."
Throughout this year, Lance and I have been very closely matched, often finishing races just two or three seconds apart. This weekend, I had a slight edge, feeling comfortable with the car and pushing it perhaps beyond its limits, which ultimately earned me P11.
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is the year 2026."
"However, I believe that as a team, we can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those teams are elite and they have a significant lead over us."
"However, being outperformed by Williams, Haas, and Red Bull suggests we must elevate our standards. Improvement is necessary."
Discussing the car for next year, Alonso mentioned, "I believe we still have an opportunity to make adjustments."
“Within a span of four months, McLaren progressed from being at the bottom to securing a spot on the podium. This serves as a clear example
“Additionally, Mercedes began the season just like we did. We were on equal footing with them for the initial four races, and they have already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don’t believe in making excuses.”
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will show progress in the upcoming series of races.
Alonso angrily remarked that the car’s current performance is insufficient and won't improve until it gets an upgrade.
"Fell short at Monza. Underperformed at Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
"I believe that unless we introduce new components, there won't be significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin."
"That’s the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is giving their all. So yes, we remain cohesive. We continue to strive. Last weekend we earned one point. Today we nearly secured two points, and that’s the challenge we’re facing."
