Fernando Alonso Downplays Adrian Newey Rumours as Aston Martin Struggles Persist
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation regarding Adrian Newey's possible announcement this week
"Aston Martin's challenges won't be met with excuses," Alonso states
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that resolving Aston Martin's issues will require more than just the efforts of a single individual, despite ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey’s potential involvement.
Rumors circulating among the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix suggest that Aston Martin might reveal their acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the departing Chief Technology Officer at Red Bull, is set to leave his position at the beginning of next year, at which point he will be able to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation regarding Aston Martin becoming his future team has intensified lately, while rumors linking him to Ferrari have diminished.
"Right now, it's just speculation, and I believe it's not a task that can be handled by just one person," Alonso commented at Monza.
"It's about focusing on our current situation and what we're creating. We need to identify what's working well, what's not, and aim to better prepare for the year 2025."
If Newey is available next year, he could manage the development of a 2026 car for a different team, possibly offering them a crucial edge when the new engine regulations are implemented.
Aston Martin has poured substantial funds into a state-of-the-art facility at Silverstone and secured a new deal with Alonso extending through 2026. Additionally, they will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine in line with the upcoming regulatory changes.
However, up to that point, outcomes have been rather dismal.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' championship standings. At the Italian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso secured 11th place, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin ahead of a major push in 2026
“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Alonso commented. “We’re relying on our team, and I believe that both Lance and I are giving our best effort every weekend.”
"An inspiring weekend, much like this one for me, will remain entirely anonymous."
"This year, Lance and I have been very competitive with each other, often finishing races just two or three seconds apart, either ahead or behind one another. This weekend, I had a slight edge and felt really good about the car, pushing it perhaps even beyond its limits. That effort resulted in a P11 finish."
"Indeed, it's disheartening. We have to remain patient and recognize that our main objective is set for 2026."
“However, as a team, I believe we can come to terms with not competing for a top four spot. Those teams are elite and significantly ahead of us.”
"We're currently trailing Williams, Haas, and Red Bull, so it's clear that we need to improve our performance and set higher standards."
Alonso commented on the vehicle for the upcoming year, stating, "I believe we still have time to respond."
"Within a span of four months, McLaren advanced from being in last place to securing a spot on the podium. This serves as a clear example
"Additionally, Mercedes began their season just like we did. For the first four races, we were neck and neck with them, and they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I don’t believe in making excuses."
However, it is improbable that Aston Martin will make progress in the upcoming races.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating that the car's current performance is insufficient until it receives an upgrade.
"Performance at Monza was unsatisfactory. The results were also below par at Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary."
“In my view, significant changes won’t occur in Baku, Singapore, or Austin unless we introduce new components.”
"The strategy is set. Everyone on the team understands what's at stake. We're giving it our all. So, yes, we remain together and continue to strive. Last weekend, we secured a point. Today, we nearly earned two points, and that's the challenge we face."
