Fernando Alonso Debunks Adrian Newey Rumours Amid Aston Martin Struggles: ‘No Room for Excuses
Fernando Alonso addresses speculation about Adrian Newey's potential announcement this week
Fernando Alonso comments on Aston Martin's difficulties: "I don’t believe in making excuses"
Fernando Alonso emphasizes that solving Aston Martin's issues requires more than just a single individual, despite ongoing speculation about Adrian Newey's involvement.
Rumors circulating in the Monza paddock during the F1 Italian Grand Prix indicate that Aston Martin may reveal their acquisition of Newey in the coming days.
Adrian Newey, the soon-to-depart chief technology officer of Red Bull, is set to leave his position early next year, at which point he will be eligible to join a competing Formula 1 team.
Speculation about Aston Martin being his future team has intensified recently, while rumors of a potential move to Ferrari have diminished.
Alonso mentioned at Monza that the information circulating is still just rumors, and he believes that resolving the issues isn't solely the responsibility of a single individual.
"It's primarily about our current situation and what we are creating. We need to recognize what is progressing well, what isn't, and aim to better prepare for 2025."
Newey being free next year means he could supervise the development of the 2026 car for a different team, possibly providing them with a significant edge when the new engine regulations are implemented.
Aston Martin has made significant investments in a new facility at Silverstone and has extended Alonso's contract through the end of 2026. They will collaborate with Honda to develop an engine that meets the upcoming regulations.
However, up to this point, the outcomes have been quite disappointing.
Aston Martin holds the fifth position in the constructors' standings. In the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso secured the 11th spot, while his teammate Lance Stroll ended up in 19th place.
The year 2025 could serve as a period of preparation for Aston Martin before they make a significant push in 202
Alonso responded by saying, "There's nothing we can do. We're reliant on our team, and both Lance and I are putting in our best efforts every weekend."
"During a particularly inspired weekend, like this one for me, I am certain it will remain entirely anonymous."
Throughout this year, Lance and I have consistently finished races within two or three seconds of each other, whether he's ahead or I'm in front. This weekend, I managed to perform slightly better. I felt really satisfied with the car and pushed it to its absolute limits, perhaps even more than 100%. As a result, I secured the 11th place finish.
"Yes, it's disappointing. We have to remain patient and keep in mind that our main goal is set for 2026."
"However, I believe our team can come to terms with not competing for a top-four spot. Those leading teams are significantly ahead of us."
"However, being behind Williams, Haas, and Red Bull now means we have to step up our game. We need to improve."
Alonso mentioned regarding the car for the upcoming year, "I believe we still have the opportunity to make adjustments."
“McLaren went from finishing last to securing a podium spot in just four months, demonstrating clear progress.”
"Additionally, Mercedes began the season on equal footing with us. For the initial four races, we were on par with them, yet they've already secured three victories this year. Therefore, I'm not one to make excuses."
However, it's improbable that Aston Martin will perform better in the upcoming events.
Alonso expressed his frustration, stating, "I believe this is the best we can do with the car in its current state, and it's simply not sufficient."
"Performance at Monza fell short. The results in Zandvoort, Spa, and Hungary were also lacking."
“I believe that we'll only see significant changes in Baku, Singapore, or Austin if we introduce new components."
"That's the strategy. The team understands the circumstances. Everyone is putting in maximum effort. So yes, we remain cohesive. We continue to strive. Last weekend, we earned one point. Today, we nearly secured two points, and that's the challenge we face."
