Espargaro and Savadori Suffer Crushing Injuries at Assen MotoGP Sprint
Aleix Espargaro sustains a metacarpal break during Assen Sprint, while Savadori incurs spinal injuries.
Espargaro reveals, "A radiograph of my right hand confirmed a straightforward break." Savadori discloses, "Suffered several breaks in the lumbar section's transverse processes of my spine."
Having already experienced discomfort from a severe tumble on Friday, which required him to be carried off on a stretcher, Aleix Espargaro faced further misfortune when he failed to maintain grip on his RS-GP during the daunting second-to-last turn on the final lap of Saturday's Assen MotoGP Sprint race.
The rider from Aprilia, known for their prowess in that particular bend, seemed to be positioning themselves for an overtaking move on Fabio di Giannantonio, who was in fifth place, aiming for the next chicane, when suddenly, misfortune hit.
The Spanish rider skidded off the track, tumbling forcefully through the gravel area before finally stopping.
At the age of 34 and approaching retirement this season, he was observed carefully holding his right hand while being assisted by marshals as he walked off.
Aprilia announced that preliminary examinations indicated neither Espargaro nor Lorenzo Savadori, the wild-card rider who had an earlier crash in the race, experienced any significant symptoms.
"The Aprilia Medical Team and the Circuit Medical Center are currently conducting a clinical and instrumental assessment on them."
"More details will be provided at the earliest opportunity."
Subsequent information revealed that Savadori and Espargaro are being transported to the hospital in Assen for additional medical evaluations.
Examinations confirmed that Espargaro has suffered a fracture, yet there remains a chance he could compete in the grand prix:
"Espargaro had his right hand x-rayed, revealing a straightforward break in the fifth metacarpal, a diagnosis that was further validated by a CT scan. He is scheduled for a medical examination tomorrow prior to the warm-up session."
Earlier today, Espargaro narrowly avoided a fall during a moment in qualifying when Marc Marquez made a sudden move to pass him on the inside and ended up crashing at the high-speed Turn 7.
On Saturday evening, Aprilia released their last update regarding Savadori, who experienced a crash at Turn 8 during the 5th lap of the Sprint, sustaining the most severe injuries.
"Savadori was subjected to additional medical and diagnostic tests which revealed several breaks in the transverse processes within his lower back. As a result, Savadori is not cleared to participate in the race."
