End of an Era: Raul Fernandez to Bid Farewell to 2023 Aprilia RS-GP at Sachsenring
Brivio announces: 'Sachsenring will be Raul Fernandez's final outing on the 2023 Aprilia'
Davide Brivio: 'For Raul, this upcoming race marks his final appearance on the 2023 Aprilia RS-GP'
Trackhouse's team leader, Davide Brivio, has announced that the upcoming MotoGP in Germany will mark Raul Fernandez's final race using the outdated, 2023 model of the RS-GP.
The Spanish racer remains the sole Aprilia competitor yet to receive the 2024 model, though the manufacturer has committed to upgrading his equipment at the earliest opportunity.
Despite regulations stipulating that engine specifications must stay the same throughout a season, with the exception of manufacturers positioned at the bottom of the concession rankings (such as Honda and Yamaha), it is believed that Aprilia's 2024 engine closely resembles the design from the previous year.
Fernandez, who is ranked 12th in the global championship standings, is scheduled to compete with the 2024 model for the very first time post-summer break at the Silverstone circuit, aligning with Aprilia's mid-season update to their fairing.
"Brivio announced that Raul's upcoming competition will be his final one aboard the 2023 Aprilia RS-GP, speaking before the Sachsenring event."
The year began unfavorably for the young Spanish rider, who suffered an injury on the first day of the Sepang test and had to withdraw from the first two races. However, he momentarily took the lead during the Catalunya Sprint, secured the team's highest finish of the year with a sixth place the following day, and, following surgery for arm pump, returned to finish in the top ten at Assen, claiming eighth place.
"Fernandez expressed satisfaction, attributing it to the positive outcome in Assen. "We performed well there, and firstly, my goal is to be fully prepared and in peak condition, especially after enduring a significant crash in Assen which was rather discomforting. I'm confident that after taking some days off to recover, I'll be feeling much better."
"At Sachsenring, my main goal is to find joy in the process, strive to qualify for Q2, and approach each day as it comes, aiming for a sense of calm. Being at ease and enjoying the race is crucial because that’s when we’re at our quickest. That’s what I’m aiming for in Germany."
The Aprilia factory squad has officially unveiled its brand-new rider roster featuring Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi, whereas Trackhouse has not disclosed any rider signings for the 2025 season yet.
Aprilia's desire for stability suggests that one member of the Trackhouse pair is likely to remain, and Fernandez's impressive performance lately has arrived opportune moment.
At the same time, Miguel Oliveira, who has secured five victories with KTM, and was given access to the 2024 model at the beginning of the year, currently finds himself in 16th place in the rankings.
"Sachsenring stands out as a distinctive and intriguing circuit, characterized by its brief layout and numerous left-hand turns," Oliveira commented. "Historically, my performances in Germany have been quite strong, so I'm eagerly anticipating this final event of the season's first half, prior to the break. My objective is to immediately gel with the RS-GP24, aiming to conclude on a high note with solid results and points."
