Dutch MotoGP Rider Evaluations: Troubling Scores for Riders Under Scrutiny
Crash.net reviews the Dutch MotoGP rider evaluations after Francesco Bagnaia's impressive performance once again.
Francesco Bagnaia – 10
Francesco Bagnaia impressed throughout the weekend, setting a new all-time lap record and leading every practice and qualifying session. He continued his dominant performance by controlling the sprint race from start to finish, leaving no room for Jorge Martin to pass. In the grand prix, Bagnaia maintained his lead on every lap once more. The factory Ducati rider showed exceptional dominance and fully earned top marks for his remarkable double victory.
Jorge Martin – 9
Martin was the sole rider who could consistently challenge Bagnaia at the start of the sprint race. He displayed impressive speed but eventually started losing about two to three-tenths of a second per lap to the current world champion. Despite receiving a three-place grid penalty for the grand prix, Martin regained second place by the end of the first lap and continued to push hard to compete with Bagnaia.
Enea Bastianini – 8.5
Despite a disappointing qualifying session, Enea Bastianini showcased his skills during the sprint race, moving up the ranks to secure a fourth-place finish. The Ducati rider achieved consecutive podium finishes, making a strong push in the grand prix to overtake notable competitors like Pedro Acosta, Fabio Di Giannantonio, Maverick Vinales, and Marc Marquez.
Marc Marquez – 7
Marc Marquez showed he had the speed to compete for a podium finish, but his sprint race came to an early end on the second lap due to a crash caused by hitting the inside kerb at turn two. Despite delivering a strong performance in the main race, failing to secure a podium spot and falling further behind Bagnaia and Martin in points must have been disappointing.
Fabio Di Giannantonio – 8
Fabio Di Giannantonio delivered another impressive performance, competing fiercely with fellow GP23 racer Marc Marquez during the grand prix. However, Di Giannantonio's chances of securing a podium finish were dashed when Marquez executed a challenging maneuver at turn six.
Maverick Vinales – 7.5
Maverick Vinales overtook Alex Marquez to secure third place and seemed poised to challenge the frontrunners, Bagnaia and Martin, as he narrowed the gap. Unfortunately, his advancement halted at that point. During Sunday's race, Vinales appeared on track to claim fourth place until an error at turn 15 caused him to veer off course, allowing Marquez and Di Giannantonio to pass him.
Brad Binder – 7
Brad Binder emerged as the leading KTM rider after Acosta’s fall on the last lap. Despite having difficulty keeping up with the rookie during the grand prix, the factory KTM standout managed to secure points in both races.
Alex Marquez – 6.5
In one of his top performances of the 2024 season to date, Alex Marquez maintained a competitive edge throughout every session. This momentum carried into the sprint until a track limits infraction resulted in the Gresini rider falling to eighth place, due to his decision to forgo the Long Lap penalty. Similar to the sprint, Marquez lost ground early in the race, slipping out of podium contention and ultimately finishing in eighth place.
Raul Fernandez – 6
The Trackhouse racer delivered an impressive performance, surpassing his seasoned teammate Miguel Oliveira once more.
Franco Morbidelli – 5.5
Starting from seventh on the grid, Franco Morbidelli couldn't capitalize on his position and had an uneventful race, ultimately finishing ahead of Jack Miller.
Jack Miller – 5.5
Jack Miller finished 13th in the sprint race. In the main race, he managed to advance positions and demonstrated better speed, but he remained significantly slower compared to Acosta and Binder.
Fabio Quartararo – 5.5
Fabio Quartararo had a strong beginning to the race, moving up a number of positions. The 2021 world champion narrowly missed finishing in the top ten, falling short by just under seven-tenths of a second.
Johann Zarco – 5
Despite facing challenges during the qualifying and sprint race, Johann Zarco managed to improve his performance, emerging as the best Honda rider once more.
Augusto Fernandez – 4.5
Similar to Zarco, Augusto Fernandez showed good improvement, ultimately finishing in 14th place. However, a letdown in his performance was evident in the significant time difference between him and Acosta before Acosta's crash. Fernandez trailed the current Moto2 champion by more than 30 seconds.
Miguel Oliveira – 4
The Portuguese racer faced another frustrating competition, trailing his teammate Fernandez by more than 20 seconds at the finish line.
Takaaki Nakagami – 3
Starting from the last position in the qualifiers, Takaaki Nakagami ended up as the first racer to complete the race without earning any points.
Luca Marini – 3
Honda had another frustrating weekend, marked by Luca Marini's withdrawal from the sprint race due to a mechanical problem. The grand prix didn't bring any improvement either, with the Italian rider ending up in the last position.
Pedro Acosta – 7
Despite facing challenges throughout the weekend, the rookie found himself in contention for a podium finish during the grand prix. However, his efforts were thwarted in the later stages when he experienced a significant crash at turn seven.
Marco Bezzecchi – 3
Marco Bezzecchi's tough 2024 season persisted as he had another disappointing race, failing to finish after crashing at turn five, and falling far behind his teammate Fabio Di Giannantonio.
Alex Rins – 3
Positioned on the outer edge of the track at the first turn, Alex Rins experienced a severe highside crash that prematurely concluded his race.
Joan Mir – 2.5
Joan Mir faced another difficult race, ending in a Did Not Finish (DNF) after the 2020 world champion crashed shortly after the start.
