Ducati’s Bold Move: The Ripple Effects of Choosing Marc Marquez Over Martin and Bezzecchi
Ducati responds to the "side effects" of selecting Marc Marquez
Davide Tardozzi acknowledges that the departure of Jorge Martin, Marco Bezzecchi, and the Pramac team is an expected consequence of their decision to bring Marc Marquez on board.
Marc Marquez's decision to join the factory Ducati team for the 2025 MotoGP season has significantly influenced the Italian manufacturer in three major aspects.
Firstly, Ducati has lost Jorge Martin, who has decided to move to Aprilia.
After Martin chose to depart from Ducati, Marco Bezzecchi followed suit, realizing that his chances of securing a position as a factory rider were slim unless he switched to a different brand.
The third significant consequence was Pramac's decision to switch from Ducati to Yamaha. Team leader Paolo Campinoti revealed that one of the factors for this move was their discontent with Ducati's choice of Marquez over Martin, prompting them to end their longstanding collaboration with Ducati and align with Yamaha instead.
In an interview with TNT Sports before the Dutch MotoGP last weekend, Tardozzi mentioned, “It took some time to make the decision because we had to choose between Enea, Jorge Martin, and Marc, all of whom had the potential to join us. It was a very challenging decision.”
"It took several weeks to reach a conclusion, but we ultimately made our choice in Mugello.
The decision-making process involved extensive discussions and data analysis, with key figures such as the factory, CEO Gigi Dall’Igna, and Mauro Grassilli playing significant roles. Ultimately, Marc was chosen.
Addressing assertions that Marquez's inclusion in the factory team has caused 'collateral damage,' Tardozzi disagreed.
"We decided four years ago to usher in a new era with fresh riders, and those riders have matured since then," said the Lenovo Ducati team manager.
"In the end, they all matured, and we chose the appropriate riders."
