Francesco Bagnaia sets a new lap record at Assen, securing the pole position for the 2024 Dutch MotoGP.
The current titleholder, who hadn't faced a defeat all weekend, felt so sure of his performance that he observed the intense last moments from within the Ducati team's pit.
In a contrasting scenario, Marc Marquez experienced a crash while attempting to overtake Aleix Espargaro at the high-speed Turn 7, which is marked at 180km/h, during his final lap, resulting in a fall to the seventh position.
Title contender Jorge Martin nearly surprised everyone by finishing just 0.081 seconds behind the pole position, while Maverick Vinales secured the last spot on the front row for Aprilia.
Alex Marquez delivered a stunning lap to lead the second row as the foremost GP23 competitor, with Espargaro in fifth place and Fabio di Giannantonio securing the sixth position.
Bagnaia faced tough competition, as Martin quickly counteracted the Italian's early lap-record achievement.
The Pramac Ducati competitor secured the pole position before Bagnaia surged ahead by 0.337 seconds, marking a significant time of 1m 30.540s.
From the sidelines of the pit lane, Bagnaia observed as a large contingent of riders obstructed one another, seeking a slipstream advantage. As time ran out, they had no choice but to accelerate their pace. It was during this moment that Marquez attempted an audacious move to overtake Espargaro, resulting in him losing control at the front.
Pedro Acosta and Fabio di Giannantonio advanced through the first qualifying round, outperforming Fabio Quartararo and Jack Miller in the process.
