Francesco Bagnaia breaks his own lap record at Assen to secure pole position for the 2024 Dutch MotoGP.
The current titleholder, who has maintained an undefeated streak throughout the weekend, felt so assured about his performance that he observed the hectic concluding moments from within the Ducati garage.
In a different scenario, Marc Marquez attempted to overtake Aleix Espargaro at the high-speed Turn 7, traveling at 180km/h, but ended up crashing on his final lap, causing him to fall back to seventh place.
Championship leader Jorge Martin nearly created a surprise by finishing just 0.081 seconds behind the pole position, while Maverick Vinales secured a spot on the front row for Aprilia.
Alex Marquez delivered an impressive lap, securing the front position on the second row as the leading GP23 rider, with Espargaro taking fifth place and Fabio di Giannantonio coming in sixth.
Bagnaia faced some competition at the top, as Martin quickly answered the Italian's preliminary lap record.
This placed the Pramac Ducati rider in the lead position until Bagnaia surged ahead by 0.337 seconds with a commanding time of 1 minute and 30.540 seconds.
From his position in the pits, Bagnaia watched as a large pack of riders hindered each other while seeking a slipstream advantage. As time dwindled, they were compelled to accelerate, during which Marquez executed a daring overtake on Espargaro but ended up losing control of the front.
Pedro Acosta and Fabio di Giannantonio advanced through the first qualifying session, surpassing Fabio Quartararo and Jack Miller.
However, Acosta crashed during his last lap, causing the rear to slide out and resulting in a spin. This led to urgent efforts to fix his favored bike before Q2.
Acosta secured the tenth position on the starting lineup.
Marco Bezzecchi, who secured pole position for 2023, experienced his second fall of the day after losing control of the front end once more during Qualifying 1.
The Sprint race in Assen is scheduled to begin at 3:00
