Double Blow for Aprilia: Espargaro and Savadori Suffer Serious Injuries in Assen Sprint
Aleix Espargaro sustains a metacarpal fracture during the Assen Sprint | Savadori experiences fractures in his back
Espargaro: 'X-ray results revealed a straightforward fracture in the right hand'. Savadori: 'Several fractures detected in the transverse processes of the lumbar spine'
After suffering a painful fall on Friday that required him to be stretchered off, Aleix Espargaro experienced another mishap when he lost control of his RS-GP at the second-to-last corner during the final lap of the Assen MotoGP Sprint race on Saturday.
The Aprilia biker, known for excelling at that particular corner, seemed ready to overtake Fabio di Giannantonio, who was in fifth position, as they approached the next chicane when things went horribly wrong.
The Spaniard slid off his bike and tumbled forcefully across the gravel trap, eventually coming to a stop.
The 34-year-old, set to retire after this season, was spotted holding his right hand while being assisted by marshals to walk away.
According to Aprilia, preliminary examinations indicated that neither Espargaro nor wild-card racer Lorenzo Savadori, who had an earlier crash in the race, showed any severe symptoms.
"The Aprilia Medical Team and the Circuit Medical Center are currently conducting clinical and instrumental assessments on them."
"More details will be provided at the earliest opportunity."
A subsequent announcement revealed that "Savadori and Espargaro are being transported to a hospital in Assen for additional medical examinations."
Medical examinations showed that Espargaro has a fracture, but he may still compete in the grand prix.
"A scan revealed that Espargaro has a straightforward fracture in the fifth metacarpal of his right hand. A follow-up medical examination is scheduled for tomorrow, prior to the warm-up session."
Earlier today, Espargaro narrowly avoided a fall when Marc Marquez made a sudden move to pass him on the inside and subsequently crashed at the high-speed Turn 7 during the qualifying session.
On Saturday evening, Aprilia provided a final update regarding Savadori, who had a significant crash at Turn 8 during the fifth lap of the Sprint and sustained the gravest injuries.
Savadori had another medical and diagnostic evaluation, which revealed several fractures in the transverse processes of his lower spine. As a result, he is not cleared to compete in the race.
