Double Blow for Aprilia: Espargaro and Savadori Sidelined by Fractures After Assen Sprint Crashes
Aleix Espargaro Sustains Metacarpal Fracture During Assen Sprint | Savadori Endures Back Fractures
Espargaro: 'X-ray revealed a straightforward fracture in his right hand.' Savadori: 'Suffered multiple fractures in the transverse processes of his lumbar spine.'
Still feeling the effects of being carried off on a stretcher following a severe crash on Friday, Aleix Espargaro experienced another mishap on the final lap of Saturday's Assen MotoGP Sprint race, losing control of his RS-GP at the daunting second-to-last corner.
The Aprilia racer, usually proficient at navigating that corner, seemed to be preparing to overtake Fabio di Giannantonio, who was in fifth position, as they approached the next chicane when calamity occurred.
The Spanish rider fell to the ground and then tumbled violently through the gravel before finally coming to a stop.
The athlete, aged 34, who plans to retire when this season concludes, was observed holding his right hand while officials assisted him in walking away.
According to Aprilia, preliminary evaluations indicated that neither Espargaro nor wild-card entrant Lorenzo Savadori, who had an earlier crash in the race, experienced any significant injuries.
"They are being assessed through clinical and instrumental methods by the Aprilia Medical Team and the Circuit Medical Center."
“More details will be provided at the earliest opportunity.”
A subsequent update revealed that "Savadori and Espargaro are being transported to a hospital in Assen for additional medical examinations."
Medical evaluations confirmed that Espargaro has a fracture, yet he might still participate in the grand prix.
"Espargaro had an x-ray on his right hand, which revealed a straightforward fracture in the fifth metacarpal, confirmed by a CT scan. He is scheduled for a medical evaluation tomorrow before the warm-up session."
Earlier today, Espargaro was fortunate to avoid a fall when Marc Marquez attempted an inside pass and ended up crashing at the high-speed Turn 7 during the qualifying session.
On Saturday evening, Aprilia provided a final update regarding Savadori, who experienced a crash at Turn 8 during lap 5 of the Sprint, sustaining the most severe injuries:
"Following additional clinical and instrumental evaluations, it was discovered that Savadori has multiple fractures in the transverse processes of his lumbar spine. Consequently, Savadori is deemed unfit to compete in the race."
