Decision Looms for Carlos Sainz: Williams or Audi for 2025 F1 Season?
Carlos Sainz is being "steered" towards a specific direction as alternatives narrow down to just two options.
"Many details about the 2026 regulations are still uncertain…"
Carlos Sainz apparently faces a decision between two options for his 2025 Formula 1 seat and has been “encouraged” towards a particular one.
Williams and Sauber, which will rebrand as Audi the following year, are the leading contenders to sign the unemployed Ferrari driver.
Aston Martin and Red Bull have decided to extend the contracts of Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez, respectively. Meanwhile, Mercedes opted not to offer a contract to Carlos Sainz, significantly narrowing his available opportunities.
"I find the idea of reviving Williams and restoring its former glory quite appealing," Natalie Pinkham mentioned on the F1 Nation podcast.
“I’m quite fond of the concept of Alex and Carlos collaborating since I believe they would complement each other effectively."
"It's a difficult decision to make."
"How significant are relationships in this context? James Vowles has collaborated with numerous remarkable drivers at Mercedes, including Lewis Hamilton."
"He's a smart individual, which is a significant attraction for Carlos."
"He has grand plans and high aspirations for the team."
"I trust him and support his vision and long-term objectives for Williams."
"However, the situation with Audi is similar. Andreas Seidl, who is highly regarded, had a positive working relationship with the team during their time together at McLaren."
Tom Clarkson mentioned that he would encourage him to consider Williams.
"In my opinion, there's still a lot of uncertainty surrounding the regulations for 2026."
"Given that it's an Audi team entering the scene, especially with their power unit being used for the first time?"
"Considering the current uncertainties, I believe that an experienced manufacturer, who successfully adapted to the last regulation changes, will have a faster start in 2026 compared to Audi."
"That's the path I would take."
"I believe he would collaborate effectively with Vowles, technical director Pat Fry, and Albon."
Williams' team principal, Vowles, revealed during the F1 Canadian Grand Prix last week that discussions have taken place regarding the potential signing of Sainz, who is set to be replaced by Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari next year.
Audi has maintained a long-term interest in Sainz, partly due to their connection with his father, a Dakar Rally champion with the company.
