Daniel Ricciardo Praises MotoGP’s Fabio Quartararo: ‘His Scars… A Different Breed
Daniel Ricciardo on Fabio Quartararo: “His scars… they're unlike ours”
"The motorcycle racers are just built differently. His mindset, his battle wounds…"
Daniel Ricciardo asserts that MotoGP racers are "a unique kind" after learning about Fabio Quartararo's experience with injury recovery.
Last September, F1 driver Ricciardo, who had recently had surgery for a broken hand, met up with his friend Quartararo, a Yamaha MotoGP rider.
Quartararo responded by seizing Ricciardo’s hand and twisting it, demonstrating that the injury could be overcome.
In an interview with Fox Sports Australia, Quartararo mentioned, "He underwent surgery and only fractured the metacarpal bone. However, he behaved as if his shoulder was completely immobilized. I asked him, 'What exactly have you broken?'"
“I was considering, ‘perhaps don’t move your hand, but at least shift your arm!’”
"I was instructing him to 'shift this hand so you’ll be prepared to return quickly,' so I ended up taking it and demonstrating. He found it incredibly amusing and couldn't stop laughing!"
Ricciardo mentioned, "He mocked me a lot that evening because I couldn't move my hand during dinner, insisting that I should be fit to race the following weekend."
"He probably didn't realize the severity of the injury, yet he made me feel utterly hopeless…"
"He thinks that the way I was holding my hand made it look like my whole arm was injured… he was definitely mocking me."
He later shared that he had once removed a screw from his skin following a surgery he underwent, simply yanking it out from the tip of his finger…
"The cyclists are truly unique. Their mindset and the injuries they endure set them apart from the rest of us."
Quartararo mentioned that it’s common for motorcyclists to suffer injuries like broken fingers or other similar issues.
“For an entire month, he behaved so childishly, afraid to use it.”
“While not every Formula One driver lacks toughness, I believe he does!”
Ricciardo and Quartararo became friends in 2019.
In his debut season, Quartararo set a record as the youngest rider to secure pole position at Jerez. However, his hopes for a win were dashed when his Yamaha malfunctioned.
Ricciardo expressed his condolences.
Quartararo recalled receiving a message from Daniel that read, “keep your head up, you were incredibly quick.”
"I thought to myself, 'Wow, this is a significant milestone in my career.'"
In the following week during the F1 Spanish Grand Prix, Quartararo met up with his new friend, and they have kept in contact from that point on.
