**Damon Hill Urges Mercedes to Show Stronger Support for George Russell Amid Criticism of Toto Wolff’s Radio Intervention**
Mercedes has been advised to support George Russell, with Toto Wolff facing accusations of "undermining him." This recommendation came from Damon Hill after the Canadian Grand Prix.
Damon Hill, the Formula 1 world champion of 1996, has advised Mercedes to support George Russell amid discussions about whether he commits too many mistakes, following the Canadian Grand Prix.
Although Russell managed to secure Mercedes' first podium finish of the year in Canada, there was a lost chance for a win, especially considering their remarkable speed in dry weather conditions.
Russell veered off course several times, most notably while he was in second place ahead of Lando Norris.
This caused him to miss the opportunity to compete against Max Verstappen for the win.
During the race, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was heard speaking to George Russell over the team radio, advising him to stay focused.
During the most recent episode of the Sky Sports F1 podcast, Hill expressed that Wolff's actions undermined Russell.
Hill expressed his view that George's challenge began when he entered a prominent position right from the start before joining Mercedes. Hill noted that George wasn't making many errors initially. However, once he reached the top level, he faced intense scrutiny, with everyone closely monitoring and critiquing his every move, becoming more vigilant about any minor mistakes.
"Well, I'm not sure. It might be a bit discouraging if your team leader is instructing you on the radio during the race, telling you to concentrate. To reference a well-known racer, I believe he understands what he's doing."
Since the beginning of last year, Russell has committed several significant errors.
He was eliminated from the races in Canada and Singapore due to his own errors, and experienced a similar crash in Australia, although this time he was distracted by a slow-moving Fernando Alonso.
Hill thinks that Russell is overexerting himself to demonstrate his worth, especially since Mercedes is not fully supporting him as they focus on chasing Verstappen and are fixated on Kimi Antonelli.
"This is certainly an issue for George," Hill remarked. "He's been with Mercedes for a while, and although the team hasn't been performing well, he's undoubtedly fulfilling his role."
“Lewis will be joining Ferrari next year. He is attempting to secure his position as the primary driver, but I believe he hasn't quite succeeded in doing so yet. This is evident because there is more discussion about who his teammate will be next year rather than focusing on George. In my opinion, Mercedes should support him more strongly and boost his confidence. If they did, he might not feel the need to push so hard to prove himself during races, as it appears he is trying to make up for something.”
"He should probably take it easy. He has the pace, the skills, and he's very smart. I'm confident he can perform well for them if they provide him with a bit more support."
