Chinese Start-Up Numemory Unveils Revolutionary 64GB Memory Chip, Challenging International Tech Giants Amid US Sanctions
Chinese start-up, Numemory, asserts a significant advancement in memory chip technology, despite US tech restrictions. The company, headquartered in Wuhan, has recently launched its 64-gigabyte NM101, a kind of storage-class memory chip, in the local market.
Numemory, previously named Xincun Technology (Wuhan) Co, has recently debuted its 64-gigabyte NM101, a type of storage-class memory (SCM) chip, in its home market. As per a government-sponsored report by the Hubei Daily on Wednesday, this move is anticipated to disrupt the long-standing dominance of global powerhouses in this sector, although the report did not provide further specifics.
The report indicates that comparable items on the market only provide capacity in the megabyte range. It highlighted the chip's potential to drastically cut the nation's dependence on overseas memory technologies.
Storage Class Memory (SCM) is a type of memory and storage technology that merges characteristics seen in Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM) and the standard NAND flash storage used in consumer electronics like smartphones. Occasionally referred to as Persistent Memory, SCM provides swift non-volatile memory to processors utilized in servers and storage systems within data centers.
The news article states that hard drives fitted with an SCM chip can save a 10GB high-definition movie in just one second.
Numemory, established in Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei province, in July 2022, announced that solid-state drives created using SCM technology can provide data centres and cloud service providers with a storage option that has substantial capacity, high density, immense bandwidth, and minimal latency.
