Bastianini Targets Qualifying Improvement to Contend for Victory: Reflects on Dutch MotoGP Podium Chase
Enea Bastianini acknowledges issues with qualifying must be tackled for victory
Enea Bastianini mentions Francesco Bagnaia "wasn't my focus" as problems during qualifying continued to affect his performance.
Enea Bastianini showcased his strong performance towards the end of the race, securing a podium finish at the Dutch MotoGP.
Positioned seventh at the midpoint of the race, Bastianini executed successful passes on Pedro Acosta, Fabio Di Giannantonio, Marc Marquez, and Maverick Vinales.
Matching the pace of Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin, Bastianini demonstrated that with improvements to his early race performance, hindered by weak qualifying outcomes, he could have been in contention for the victory.
Discussing his rally through the pack, Bastianini shared, "It was enjoyable, but being on the motorcycle changes things. You're having fun, yet there's an element of danger."
"The race was gorgeous yet considerably more challenging than the one we had yesterday. Beginning from the tenth position, I made it to the first corner on the inside, but then other riders shut me out."
"After completing six to seven laps, I attempted to pass the other competitors, and towards the final stretch of the race, I spotted an opportunity to finish in the top three. I put forth my utmost effort to achieve it."
Bastianini emphasized that his goal for the weekend wasn't to equal Bagnaia's performance, but instead, he believes that improving his results in qualifying is crucial for the future.
Bastianini stated, "This time, Pecco wasn't the one I was aiming to beat, as he's been incredibly quick right from the first practice. Jorge, on the other hand, has shown significant improvement."
"Qualifying can be a challenge for me, and attempting to complete the time attack flawlessly [is not simple]."
Additionally, my configuration on Saturday morning wasn't very effective. During the initial segment of the race, things were tough because the competitors ahead were using soft tyres, and Brad was quick in the faster sections of the track, making it challenging for me to pass them during braking.
"I must take action towards that goal to strive for the win because as the race comes to an end, we consistently outpace the leaders."
