Bastianini Predicts Marquez as the Man to Beat at Sachsenring Despite Recent Drought
German MotoGP: Bastianini Foresees Marc Marquez as Top Competitor
Enea Bastianini remarked, "Marc Márquez has consistently performed well at Sachsenring, leading me to believe he will be the main contender to watch this weekend."
Although Marc Marquez hasn't secured a MotoGP victory since 2021, Enea Bastianini anticipates that the Spaniard will be the top contender this weekend due to his unmatched track record at the Sachsenring.
Marquez and Bastianini are competing for the third position in the world championship, following Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia.
Enea Bastianini has secured podium finishes in the last two races, narrowing the gap to only six points behind the Gresini team rider, who is set to join the factory Ducati team in 2025.
However, considering that Marquez has not lost a Sunday grand prix at the Sachsenring since his victory in the 125cc class in 2009—despite his absence from the 2022 and 2023 races due to injury—Bastianini anticipates a challenging battle to score points against him this weekend.
Enea Bastianini, who secured eighth place in the previous year's German MotoGP, remarked, "Based on the statistics, Sachsenring is a circuit where Marc Márquez consistently performs well, so I anticipate he will be the one to surpass this weekend."
"In any event, I am assured: our fundamental configuration is performing effectively in most places, and we are coming off two successful Grand Prix races. I firmly believe that we can achieve good results in Germany too. We will put in our maximum effort as usual!"
Teammate Bagnaia just missed defeating Jorge Martin in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Germany last year.
If Bagnaia can maintain his winning momentum, he could reclaim the championship lead by the summer break. Currently, the Pramac rider is only 10 points ahead of the reigning two-time champion.
Bagnaia mentioned that this upcoming weekend marks the final one before the summer break, and he aims to finish this first segment of the season on a high note. He reflected on the last three weekends, which have been incredibly successful, with the only exception being the missed victory in the Barcelona Sprint. He added that the performance in Holland was flawless.
“Martín had a great performance in Germany last year, but we also improved our competitiveness on Sunday. Now, it's crucial to maintain our concentration. We have all the capabilities to keep excelling, and if we maintain our current work ethic, I'm confident we'll perform well this weekend as well.”
