Bagnaia’s Dominance at Assen Sparks Admiration Among Rivals as MotoGP Title Race Heats Up
Francesco Bagnaia's outstanding performance at Assen earns praise from competitors
Francesco Bagnaia's exceptional twin victories in Assen have garnered acclaim from his competitors.
Francesco Bagnaia increased his rivalry with Jorge Martin in the MotoGP championship during the races in Assen, leading from start to finish in both the sprint and the grand prix.
Throughout the weekend, Bagnaia dominated nearly every session, with the sole exception being the warm-up, where he didn't secure the fastest time.
Bagnaia leads Martin by 10 points as they approach the upcoming MotoGP race in Germany at Sachsenring, yet his showing at Assen was significant for reasons beyond the standings.
Bagnaia has secured victories in five out of the last six races, sprints included, and similar to his performance in 2022, he is showing his top form consistently over time.
Amazed at Bagnaia's showing, Fabio Quartararo, who was overtaken by Bagnaia for the 2022 championship despite having a 91-point advantage over the Italian halfway through the season, remarked, "He's remarkable. What else is there to say? He's clinched both the Sprint and the race in the recent two Grand Prix events.
"Undoubtedly, he stands out remarkably. It's evident he's the top competitor. The moment you begin to secure victories, your confidence soars, giving you a sense of invincibility."
"This sensation is something every rider aspires to experience. At this moment, he's achieved it, which means he's going to remain at the top for an extended period."
Marc Marquez has consistently emerged as a formidable challenger to Bagnaia throughout 2024. Yet, the eight-time world champion was unable to match the speed of his soon-to-be teammate.
Nonetheless, Marquez remains hopeful about competing with Bagnaia and Martin, even though the GP24 appears to have a distinct advantage.
"Marquez noted that Bagnaia showed incredible speed, and Jorge matched that intensity," Marquez observed. "They've both been on an impressive pace since Montmelo."
"I aim to bridge the gap, though challenging, my goal remains to consistently vie for a spot among the top three."
