Bagnaia Triumphs in Thrilling FP1 at Dutch MotoGP, Despite Early Setback and Intense Rivalry with Marquez
At the Dutch MotoGP, Francesco Bagnaia emerged as the leader in FP1, surpassing Marc Marquez, following the removal of Fabio Di Giannantonio's initially fastest lap.
The first free practice session for MotoGP at Assen began terribly for Aprilia racer Aleix Espargaro, who, just after leaving the pit lane and following his victory in the Catalunya sprint, was forced to leave the track almost immediately.
Espargaro managed to return to the pit lane with the help of track marshals who assisted him.
Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez were competing for the fastest laps, constantly overtaking each other at the forefront of the rankings.
Bagnaia emerged as the initial racer to clock a lap under 1 minute and 33 seconds, establishing a lead of two-tenths of a second over the eight-time world champion.
Nonetheless, Bagnaia's lap time was invalidated for going beyond the track boundaries, whereas Marquez just managed to break the 1-minute 33-second threshold, claiming the leading position.
Bagnaia's disqualified lap time resulted in him dropping to seventh place, which soon turned into ninth after Fabio Quartararo and Marco Bezzecchi moved up the ranks, surpassing him.
Bezzecchi narrowly avoided a mishap with his GP23 Ducati experiencing significant instability upon approaching turns 14 and 15.
Maintaining his impressive performance, Raul Fernandez surpassed Marquez with a lap time of 1 minute, 32.962 seconds.
Nonetheless, Alex Marquez managed to create a gap of more than a tenth of a second over Fernandez, taking advantage of the increasing grip provided by the track.
Bagnaia reclaimed the lead, establishing a margin of almost two-tenths ahead of Alex Marquez.
Bagnaia subsequently delivered an outstanding lap, outperforming his prior best by more than two tenths of a second.
Bagnaia was on the verge of beating his own record, yet it was Raul Fernandez and Alex Marquez who managed to make gains, advancing to third and fifth positions, respectively.
Marc Marquez, previously in second place, closed in to within a tenth of Bagnaia's pace before Fabio Di Giannantonio ultimately secured the fastest time overall.
Di Giannantonio's quickest lap was ultimately invalidated for going beyond the bounds of the track, returning the leading position to Bagnaia.
