Francesco Bagnaia took the lead in the 2024 Dutch MotoGP Sprint race, held under the bright and warm skies of Assen on a Saturday afternoon.
Securing pole position by dominating all preceding sessions, Bagnaia gradually pulled ahead of championship frontrunner Jorge Martin, while Maverick Vinales of Aprilia rounded out the top three finishes.
Martin heads into Sunday's grand prix with a 15-point advantage.
Enea Bastianini, Bagnaia's teammate from the official Ducati squad, surged through the pack to secure a fourth-place finish.
Alex Marquez was imposed with a long lap penalty due to exceeding track boundaries, a sanction also experienced by Raul Fernandez, not long after Bastianini had passed him.
Despite the odds, Alex emerged as the lone Gresini rider to finish the race. Marc Marquez, who started seventh due to a qualifying crash, made his way to fifth by the first lap, only to fall out of contention early in the second lap after hitting an inside curb.
Aleix Espargaro, already in pain from a tumble on Friday and narrowly avoiding involvement in Marc Marquez's mishap earlier today, experienced a significant crash while in sixth position during the last corner of the final lap.
Lorenzo Savadori and Alex Rins experienced crashes, with the Yamaha competitor managing to get back into the race, whereas Luca Marini's Repsol Honda appeared to encounter a smoky engine malfunction.
The elevated temperatures led every rider in the top ten to select the hard front tire, accompanied by a soft rear tire.
Updated regulations for tyre pressure in 2024 stipulate that competitors are required to maintain a minimum pressure of 1.8 bar in the front tyres—down from the previous 1.88 bar—for at least 60% of a Grand Prix race distance, an increase from the former requirement of 50%, or for 30% of a Sprint race's duration.
If a driver does not achieve the required minimum in a Grand Prix, they will face a post-race time penalty of 16 seconds, or an 8-second penalty in the case of a Sprint or shorter race.
