Aragon MotoGP Win Not Enough to Revive Marquez’s Championship Hopes, Focus Shifts to Consistency
Marc Marquez “too far to contend for the title” despite Aragon MotoGP triumph
Even with a win at the Aragon MotoGP, Marc Marquez’s hopes for the championship are still dim.
Marc Marquez, an eight-time World Champion, clinched victory at the Aragon MotoGP. This win narrowed his championship points gap to 70, but Marquez believes he remains too distant from being a serious title contender.
Besides trailing Jorge Martin by 70 points, Marquez also lags 47 points behind Francesco Bagnaia, who leads 2024 with seven Grand Prix victories and three Sprint race wins.
During the post-race press conference in Aragon, Marquez conceded, "No, we are far," when questioned about his chances in the championship. He elaborated, "We keep losing points, more and more. We are too far behind."
"It's not just one competitor; there are actually two who show more consistency than we do."
"A single weekend won't transform our lives. It will certainly benefit us, but it won't make a dramatic difference. We are too far behind to contend for the championship this year."
"However, our realistic target is to compete for a spot in the top three. There are still many points up for grabs and numerous events that could unfold, especially considering the unpredictable weather conditions in Asia, such as storms and rain."
"However, we continue to have a good time, which is what matters most to me, and we will strive to keep competing with the best."
Highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency to compete for the championship, Marquez noted the atypical conditions present during the Aragon round.
"The past weekend was incredibly positive, and the atmosphere was fantastic," he commented. "However, we need to stay grounded as the conditions were quite unique. Personally, I found the Red Bull Ring Grand Prix to be more significant because I felt excellent and was performing at a level very close to the leading competitors."
"The importance of this win is immense, and our next goal is to achieve consistency. We need to learn from each race, but I'm aware that there will be weekends where we'll face more challenges than usual. Achieving consistency will be the next crucial step."
Marquez highlighted Enea Bastianini's situation, noting that despite being viewed as a strong contender for the championship following his double win at the British Grand Prix, Bastianini finished fifth in Aragon after starting in 14th place.
Marquez explained that while they aim to replicate their success in the future, their speed can vary from one weekend to the next—Enea Bastianini, for instance, was quick at Silverstone. However, he emphasized that achieving consistency is the most challenging goal they are working towards.
Jorge Martin, who is ahead in the championship by 23 points following the Aragon race, somewhat concurred with Marquez.
The championship leader mentioned that Marc is currently not close in the standings, but if he begins to win every race weekend, he could become a contender for the title.
"Just two races back, Enea Bastianini was contending for the championship. Then he fell out of the running. Now, it's Marc's turn to make an impact. Following his strong performances in Austria and here, he's undoubtedly one of the top riders on the circuit and a serious contender for the title."
