Aprilia’s Bold Move: Sterlacchini’s Arrival Sparks Optimism Among Future Stars Martin & Bezzecchi
Upcoming colleagues Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi have shared their thoughts on the appointment of Fabiano Sterlacchini as the new technology chief for Aprilia. Sterlacchini is set to start his role with Aprilia in
The appointment of Fabiano Sterlacchini as the technical director for Aprilia in the 2025 MotoGP season represents a significant and essential shift for the Italian company.
Sterlacchini spent 17 years at Ducati, where he was the technical director, before moving to KTM in 2021.
At the beginning of the year, KTM announced that Sterlacchini had left the company, and by summer, it was reported that he was deep in discussions with Honda.
On Friday during the Japanese Grand Prix, Aprilia revealed that it had appointed Sterlacchini as the new technical director, succeeding Romano Albesiano, who is set to join Honda.
Jorge Martin, set to become part of the Aprilia team next year, has not previously collaborated with Sterlacchini, yet he commended the decision to bring him on board.
"I'm not sure what to say," he mentioned.
"We plan to hold off until Valencia before I begin collaborating with Fabiano. It appears that this change has sparked a lot of enthusiasm among everyone, so I'm thrilled with their decision."
"We'll have a clearer picture after Valencia. I haven’t collaborated with him yet. Undoubtedly, he excelled at KTM. He brings a wealth of experience from both Ducati and KTM. Therefore, I believe his expertise will greatly benefit Aprilia."
Marco Bezzecchi, who will soon be teaming up with Martin, mentioned, "I've never had the chance to talk to him face-to-face."
"Regardless, I am aware that he's an extremely skilled engineer who has produced impressive work not only at Ducati but also at KTM."
"I'm pleased for them and glad that he's becoming part of the project. At the moment, it's something that's fully occupying my thoughts."
"I'm not sure if my perspective is particularly valuable at the moment because I'm deeply immersed in my current work."
"In any case, I see it as positive news. It seems they're highly motivated and eager to enhance their performance and compete for top spots."
"They are highly driven, which I view as a good thing. Therefore, I will aim to approach the situation with that same level of enthusiasm."
Aleix Espargaro, who currently races for Aprilia, is set to become a test rider for Honda. He remarked that Albesiano's departure would be a significant setback for the Noale company. However, he acknowledged that Aprilia requires a substantial transformation, and he believes that Sterlacchini will provide the necessary uplift for the team.
"It's clear that this is a significant setback, as I believe that over time and with greater understanding, we'll come to appreciate the accomplishments Romano made during his tenure with Aprilia," he stated.
"The experience has been incredible. So, I commend him for his work. However, I believe Aprilia requires significant transformation."
"This is a significant morale booster for the team in Noale. They've brought in different riders, introduced new crew leaders, and are set to appoint a new technical director."
"It's a step or two forward for Aprilia looking ahead, and I'm pleased because it's necessary for them."
