Alpine Signals Tough Action Against Ocon After Gasly Clash in Monaco Grand Prix
Alpine warns Esteban Ocon of potential repercussions following his clash with Pierre Gasly during the Monaco Grand Prix.
Bruno Famin, the head of Alpine F1, has warned Esteban Ocon of potential repercussions following his crash with Pierre Gasly during the first lap of the Monaco Grand Prix.
Ocon made contact with Gasly while attempting a bold pass at Portier during the race's opening lap in Monte Carlo.
Ocon's bold maneuver resulted in a collision with Gasly right after the turn, launching his car into the air as a consequence.
Gasly managed to keep racing and eventually secured a 10th place finish, whereas Ocon couldn't make it back to the starting line for the race's resumption after the red flag.
Following the incident, F1 officials imposed a five-place grid penalty on Ocon for the upcoming race.
However, Famin hinted that the penalties might extend beyond the current measures, indicating possible additional consequences.
"He expressed sorrow over witnessing such an event," he shared with Canal+.
"This is precisely the scenario we hoped to avoid. Esteban's aggressive move was completely unexpected and unwarranted."
"This was precisely the outcome we hoped to avoid, and we recognize the need to take decisive action. We are prepared to make a difficult choice."
"If the battle was for a top-three spot in the closing moments of the race, then perhaps it could be justified. However, attempting an overtaking maneuver at Le Portier on the very first lap, especially with no space given to his teammate, was simply not the right decision."
Following the competition, Ocon accepted responsibility for the occurrence.
"Ocon clarified, saying, 'We definitely review everything and strive to improve for the following event.'"
"We need to be cautious, yet simultaneously, we're putting in 120 percent effort to break into the top 10, for myself, for Pierre."
"Yesterday, we really tested our boundaries during the qualifying round. Errors were made. That's all there is to it."
The decision Alpine makes concerning Ocon is still pending.
Should they opt to bench him for a weekend, they have the option of calling up either Jack Doohan or Mick Schumacher as his replacement.
